Whidbey Island is welcoming back the internationally acclaimed world music ensemble, LIBANA, celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. The concert will be at Whidbey Island Center for the Arts on Friday, May 22, 2010 at 7:30 PM. Ticket price for the concert is $25 and includes a coupon good for $25 credit for any Northwest Language Academy program.
Libana has appeared at festivals, concert halls and universities from coast to coast as well as internationally. The ensemble was chosen to provide the theme music for an NBC documentary narrated by Maya Angelou, and have been featured on many radio stations, including National Public Radio, Canadian Broadcasting Co and around the world on Monitor Radio.
Their acapella songs open windows into diverse, rarely heard music from around the world, ranging from Balkan harmonies to Latin American rhythms, from hauntingly beautiful sounds of Slav music from Hungary to riveting ritual exorcism dance with percussion from Egypt.
Since 1979, Libana has been dedicated to the exploration, research and performance of music of the world's women. Libana's concerts, workshops, recordings, publications and sense of community have inspired the repertoire of performing ensembles and formation of countless song circles here in the Pacific Northwest and worldwide.
In addition to the WICA concert, Libana will offer a singing workshop on Monday 24th, 7 to 9:00 PM. at Langley United Methodist Fellowship Hall. Cost is $35.
Libana presents a song workshop Singing rounds and chants from around the world, participants create mesmerizing harmonies, with awareness on relaxed breathing & easeful vocal production. Come with open ear and heart and celebrate the joy and community of singing together.
